Happy Faces Fill the BBQ on the River Fly-In

On Saturday, August 15th, the Antique Airplane Association hosted the Excelsior Springs Memorial Airport BBQ on the River Fly-In in conjunction with the 15th annual BBQ on the River festivities.  Visitors at the airport once again enjoyed a pancake breakfast, which was provided by the AAA Chapter and BBQ lunch which was served by the KC BBQ Truck.

3EXYE01As it is every year, the highlight of the day were the airplane rides which were free to kids between the ages 8 and 17.  The rides were donated by AAA Chapter Members.  Four volunteer pilots flew 45 kids over 4 hours in the summer heat.  Many of the kids had never been in an airplane before in their lives!

The AAA Chapter was very happy to have assistance from George Richmond who donated not only his time to help fly kids but his airplane as well.  The Richmonds traveled all the way from Omaha, Nebraska to participate in the festivities. 3EXYE02

AAA President Bruce Bellemore commented, “It’s great to see the looks on these kids faces as they wait in anticipation of their flight and then the smiles on their faces when they return.”

The AAA Chapter is currently making plans for another fly-in event which will also include airplane rides for kids.  Visit the Excelsior Springs Memorial Airport Facebook page for updates.
